Most UK franchisors sell opportunities by exclusive territory — a defined area, usually based on postcodes or population, where you alone operate the brand. When you browse by county above, you're seeing franchisors actively recruiting in that area. Territory availability changes constantly: a brand fully sold in Surrey may have prime territories open in Yorkshire. If a franchise interests you but doesn't show in your county, it's always worth enquiring — many franchisors will map a bespoke territory for the right candidate.
Home-based and van-based franchises: location matters less than you think
A large share of UK franchises under £30,000 are run from home or from a van — think domestic cleaning, pet care, tutoring, property services and business coaching. For these, your "location" is simply where your customers are, and most of the UK qualifies. If you live in a rural county with fewer listings, filtering by investment level or browsing all opportunities will usually surface far more options than a strict county search.
Where are franchises growing fastest?
London and the South East remain the largest franchise markets by volume, but the strongest recent growth has come from the North West, Yorkshire and the Midlands, where lower property and labour costs improve margins for food, fitness and home-services brands. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland often have wide-open territory availability for national brands — a genuine first-mover advantage if you're based there.
Choosing between locations and sectors
Location is only half the decision. The other half is what kind of business suits you — so it pays to browse by sector too, whether that's care, food and beverage, children's education or home improvement. The strongest matches happen where an available territory in your area meets a sector you'd genuinely enjoy running for the next five to ten years.
